Lowdown on the Point Guards

Posted on: July 21, 2008 9:55 am

Point Guards: Depending on the matchup I have in a given week I choose between two different guards both basically running the same style of offense.

1. Lafayette "Fat" Lever: He was considered one of the league's best point guards in the late 1980's while a member of the Nuggets, despite his size at 6 ft. 3 in., he regularly led them in rebounding.  He is the Francise's leader in all-time steals and second in career Assists.  Lever is one of only three players in NBA History to record 15 plus points, rebounds, and assists in a single playoff game ( the others being Jason Kidd and Wilt Chamberlain).

Here are some of his stats / Four best years in the NBA:

  • 86-87 Nuggets 18.9ppg 8.0apg 8.9rpg 2.5spg ( All-NBA 2nd Team / All-Defensive 2nd Team )
  • 87-88 Nuggets 18.9ppg 7.8apg 8.1rpg 2.7spg ( All Star Game )
  • 88-89 Nuggets 19.8ppg 7.9apg 9.3rpg 2.7spg
  • 89-90 Nuggets 18.3ppg 7.9apg 9.3rpg 2.1spg ( All Star Game )
  • Top Ten in the League in steals ( 8 times )
  • Top Ten in the League in assists ( 4 times )

2. Gail Goodrich: Known as the "other guy" next to Jerry West of the great Lakers teams of the 70's.  But the fiery lefthander ( 6 ft. 1 in. )proved he is someone who can be "the guy" by being the leading scorer on one of the greatest teams in NBA History ( 71-72 Lakers ).  He led the Lakers famed fast break offense.  Later in New Orleans, he and Pistol Pete Maravich became the highest-scoring backcourt in the league, averaging a combined 48 points.

Here are some of his stats / Four best years in the NBA:

  • 71-72 Lakers 25.9ppg 4.5apg 3.6rpg ( All-Star )
  • 72-73 Lakers 23.9ppg 4.4apg 3.5rpg ( All-Star )
  • 73-74 Lakers 25.3ppg 5.2apg 3.0rpg ( All-Star / All-NBA 1st Team )
  • 74-75 Lakers 22.6ppg 5.8apg 3.0rpg ( All-Star )
  • Five Time NBA All-Star
  • Led the League in 73-74 in Free Throws ( attempts / made )
  • 1996-97 NBA Greatest 50 players of all time List
  • Hall of Fame in 1996

Both guards very used to a fast paced offense, Goodrich led the Lakers Fast Break, Lever ran the Nuggets Run and Gun. With Lever being a few inches taller and possesing more of an all around game he can be matched up against the taller point guards we will be going against.  Goodrich will be inserted when we need a bit more scoring, as he was more of a score first point than a passer, but still got his teamates involved.

Lowdown on the Point Guards

To me, Fat Lever was always underrated. However, I think Goodrich is a tad overrated. He was on a team with West, Baylor, and Wilt... not hard to be great on a team like that...
